08/04/2017 - COMME to Tieton | Comme des Garçons Fashion and Design COMME to Tieton | Comme des Garçons Fashion and Design features work from three decades by Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons. The fashion designer’s works are currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Kawakubo is only the second living fashion designer to ever have a retrospective there--the first being Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 exhibit. Now you can see her work right here in Tieton! Rei Kawakubo’s avant-garde designs have been highly influential to generations of fashion designers, and they demonstrate art and fashion as one, sometimes privileging one over the other. From the Collection of Cynthea J. Bogel, eleven Kawakubo-designed ensembles, many with shoes, from sculptural to flat, abstract to velvet and lace, will be on display at Mighty Tieton’s newest event space, 617, August 4 through September 3 Friday through Sunday from 12 - 3pm. There will be a reception free and open to the public on August 12 from 12 - 3pm.

08/26/2017 - 2nd Annual All Nations Student Powwow at Heritage University

Heritage University’s two Native American student clubs are bringing the successful All Nations Student Powwow back to campus for a second year. This year’s powwow will take place Saturday, August 26, 2017.

“Heritage University is located on the ancestral lands of the Yakama Nation,” said Brenda Lewis, president of the student club American Indian Business Leaders (AIBL) of Heritage University. “The powwow is a great way to celebrate and share the rich culture of the Yakama people with our community. We knew after the success of our first event, where more than 500 joined us, that we would make this an annual activity.”

The event opens at 10:00 a.m. with the Grand Entry taking place at 1:00 p.m. It will feature a drumming competition as well as men’s and women’s traditional, fancy, grass and jingle dance competitions for dancers of all ages—from tiny tots to adults over 55.  Several honor dances and intertribal dances, where people from all different cultures are invited to participate, are also planned. The campus will be filled throughout the day with vendors selling food, crafts and other merchandise. Rounding out the day will be a hosted evening meal at 6:00 p.m.

The Toppenish drum group Wild Rose Singers will serve as Head Drum for the Powwow. Heritage University board member and long-time supporter Arlen Washines, deputy director for Yakama Nation Human Services, will serve as master of ceremonies. Recent Heritage graduate Jacob Billy will serve as arena director. Casey Cree will be the whip man. The event is co-sponsored by the Heritage University Native American Club (
HUNAC).

The Powwow is a free event and open to the public. Dancer and drummer registration will open at 10:00 a.m. and will remain open until 2:00 p.m. The first five drums to sign up for the event will be awarded a stipend. Vendor applications are still being accepted.  For more information, visit heritage.edu/powwow, or call (509) 865-8588.

This is a great opportunity to develop communication and conflict resolution skills and cultivate nonviolent, collaborative dispute resolution in our community and in your personal life. With the current divisive atmosphere in the country, mediation is a great way to bring people together. Training Components include: active listening skills and techniques; negotiation; conflict theories and styles; acknowledgement; restating/reflecting/reframing ... and much more. Optional mediator certification is available through the DRC with additional training.
